This month’s Win10 1903 patch throws ‘surprising error; quitting’ and doesn’t play nicely with an Intel video driver | Computerworld

The primary October cumulative replace for Win10 model 1903, KB 4517389, triggers many complaints about rogue ‘X’ marks, black screens in Chrome, and an unnerving ‘surprising error; quitting’ message on older applications. Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged both.

For those who put in this month’s first Win10 model 1903 cumulative replace, KB 4517389, you could be in for a few surprises.

Mark Busby on AskWoody reported an odd bug shortly after the patch was launched:

After putting in KB4517389 on these Home windows techniques, when opening 16-bit purposes an error message is displayed “surprising error; quitting.” …  After eradicating the replace the appliance works fantastic as soon as extra.

JoJones4 nailed the issue on the Microsoft Solutions discussion board

I’ve a Home windows 10 House 1903 32bit machine.

After putting in the home windows replace KB4517389 any applications that have been coded in Microsoft Visible Fundamental three not run and provides the message ‘surprising error; quitting.’ This message seems to be a part of VBRUN300.DLL. If I uninstall the replace the applications work okay once more.

I’ve tried operating these applications as administrator however this makes no distinction.

Though the replies from Microsoft on the Solutions Discussion board weren’t a lot assist, it now appears that 32-bit variations of Home windows gained’t run older Visible Fundamental three.zero applications — at the least, applications that require the 1990s-era VBRUN300.DLL runtime.

The one resolution seems to be uninstalling the newest patch. Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the bug on its Launch Standing Info web page, so it isn’t clear if Microsoft is even conscious of the issue — and it’s anyone’s guess if it’ll ever get mounted.

The second drawback — a driver incompatibility drawback, apparently with an Intel driver — was the topic of a put up by Mayank Parmar at Home windows Newest. Parmar cites dozens of complaints on-line that boil all the way down to this:

For those who set up Home windows 10 KB4517389 (Construct 18362.418) on a PC that has Intel show driver model 26.20.100.7157 or probably different variations, fundamental options like Begin menu, Home windows Search or Google Chrome will render incorrectly. … On the time of scripting this story, greater than 60 customers have confirmed show points on Microsoft’s group discussion board. Customers have documented the next bugs:

Home windows Search and Web Explorer with ‘X’ throughout dialog and hyperlinks
Triangled photographs in Microsoft Phrase.
Chrome rendering a black display screen.

The answer is to manually replace Intel video the driving force. DHC driver 26.20.100.7157 was the newest driver obtainable till August, 2019 — and apparently it is put in on many machines. @EP recommends:

Strive updating the Intel Graphics drivers to model 26.20.100.7212 or increased

Take a look at the KEY ISSUES FIXED part of the 7212 launch notes:

Minor graphical anomalies could also be noticed when opening Microsoft Retailer or Home windows 10 begin menu.

Once more, Microsoft hasn’t acknowledged the battle, though it seems to be widespread. (Microsoft has, prior to now, famous main driver incompatibilities on its Launch Standing Info web page.)

It’s an open query whether or not these bugs additionally canine the newest, best Win10 model 1909, the erstwhile 1903 Service Pack, which is at present ready within the wings for a November launch.
